As per the Annual Report of the Pay Research Unit (PRU) under the Department of Expenditure, the total number of vacant posts for civilian regular employees was 9,64,359 as of 1st March 2022. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has consistently directed Ministries and Departments of the Central Government to ensure a timely filling of these vacant positions.

Filling up these vacant posts is an ongoing and continuous process. In pursuit of this goal, Rozgar Mela events are being organized across the country in a Mission Mode to facilitate the recruitment of suitable candidates. The new appointees through these events are inducted into various Central Ministries, Departments, Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), and Autonomous Bodies, which include Health & Education Institutes, Public Sector Banks, etc.

Further details from the Annual Report of the Pay Research Unit (PRU) indicate that, as of 1st March 2022, the Ministries/Departments of Railways, Defence (Civil), Home Affairs, Posts, and Revenue had a total of 36,20,782 sanctioned posts, out of which 8,39,821 positions were still vacant.
