Australia Post invests in EVS to help with the Christmas rush

October 17, 2019

Australia Post has introduced 182 three-wheeled Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) to its Queensland fleet to help deliver more parcels.

The vehicles are equipped to carry over 100 small parcels and up to 1,200 letters and are part of a national deployment of 961 EDVs, which will be wheeled out by February 2020.

Australia Post General Manager Deliveries Queensland Angela Creedon said the new vehicles are a timely addition in the lead up to an expected record-breaking Christmas, as the business continues its support of e-commerce across the country.

“Our EDVs can carry three times more than our traditional postie motorbike, and that extra capacity will come in handy as we approach Christmas,” Ms Creedon said.

“We’re currently servicing two of Queensland’s biggest online shopping hotspots, with 55 vehicles delivering to Heathwood and surrounding suburbs – with that number to grow to 160 – and 22 in Rockhampton.

“Today, our posties deliver 42 % of all parcels, and we need vehicles with the capacity to continue delivering for our customers – especially in suburbs like Heathwood where online shopping grew 24.7 % in 2018 from the previous year, and Rockhampton which grew 19.2 %.”

Ms Creedon said along with added capacity, the vehicles come with added safety features, meaning more protection for posties.

“These vehicles are more visible, more stable, have increased rider protection and lower on-road speeds, all of which makes our posties safer.”

“We have made modifications such as adding an overhead canopy, dash cams, a hydraulic seat, speed limiters, engine immobilisers and automatic storage locking systems, based on feedback from posties.

“Our posties love the extra safety features, customers love the extra carrying capacity, and everyone loves the almost-silent running – including dogs.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey welcomed Australia Post’s announcement, saying it backed in the Queensland Palaszczuk Government’s push for electric vehicles and 50 % renewables by 2030.

“I think almost every Queenslander can remember their local postie zipping down the street delivering letters. This announcement means we’ll have posties delivering the goods for generations to come, all while using clean, green energy,” Mr Bailey said.

“Queensland is already at the forefront of electric vehicles in Australia, with the Electric Super Highway: a 17-station fast-charging network from Coolangatta to Cairns. It’s great to see businesses like Australia Post helping to lead that change too.”

FedEx welcomes Roxo™, the FedEx SameDay Bot to the U.A.E

October 15, 2019
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, today announces that Roxo™ will make its first international appearance in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Roxo™ is an autonomous delivery device, designed to travel on sidewalks and along roadsides, safely delivering smaller shipments to customers’ homes and businesses. Its features include pedestrian-safe technology from the iBot, plus advanced technology such as LiDAR and multiple cameras, allowing the zero-emission, battery-powered bot to be aware of its surroundings. These features are coupled with machine-learning algorithms to detect and avoid obstacles, plot a safe path, and allow the bot to follow road and safety rules. Proprietary technology makes it highly capable, allowing it to navigate unpaved surfaces, curbs, and to even climb some steps for an extraordinary door-to-door delivery experience.

“Roxo™ is currently testing in the U.S. and will play a new role in the last-mile delivery market, one that is not currently addressed by any other automated service or technology. Feedback from customers will ensure that real-use conditions are taken into consideration as early as possible during the on-going development of Roxo’s capabilities,” said James R. Muhs, Regional President for FedEx Express in the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa. It is anticipated that in the future, Dubai will join test cities in the United States including Memphis, Tennessee, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Plano and Frisco, Texas.

“The FedEx SameDay Bot is an innovation changing the landscape of on-demand hyper-localized delivery, and we are excited for Dubai to be the first international city to host an appearance by Roxo. The UAE is recognized internationally as a future-forward city, with a positive regulatory framework, world-class infrastructure, and a fertile environment for the testing and adoption of robotics, and we look forward to testing Roxo here in the future.” continued Mr. Muhs.

FedEx will collaborate with companies in several segments to help assess their needs and opportunities in Dubai. Future local assessment would operate similar to the testing currently underway in the United States, with selected customers providing insight and advice on their needs and requirements.

Royal Mail introduces augmented reality and Alexa to its App

October 11, 2019
Royal Mail is launching a number of new features in its mobile App to help senders and recipients manage their deliveries more effectively and enhance the customer experience.

As part of the update, Royal Mail has launched a new Augmented Reality (AR) parcel sizer. Royal Mail is the first delivery provider in the UK to enable customers to use AR technology to improve their experience. The parcel sizer is a tool available with AR supported devices to help users find the right format size and price for their item. Users can then purchase postage directly via the app, making it simpler than ever to send a parcel.

Users of the Royal Mail App will also be able to track an item using Alexa simply by saying a code name (alias) they have previously set for a mail item on the App. After setting up the code name, users need to simply say ‘Alexa Ask Royal Mail to track my item'. Alexa will say ‘tell me the reference number or alias of the item you’d like to track’. Once confirmed Alexa will give the latest status of the item.

The latest version of the App also enables users to access previous labels for postage by using the new sending history feature available from the home screen. This will show users the sending history for postage bought on the app only.

Since the launch of the Royal Mail App last year, it has been downloaded over 500,000 times. This is the first major milestone on a journey to being the go-to app for parcel shipping and ‎tracking. In the last year, there have been several updates including:

Send an item - buy postage on the App in just a few steps.
Postcode and address finder – enter part of the address and the App fills in the blanks.
Find any Post Office location or Customer Service Point/Delivery Office – to print labels or drop off items, with opening hours, address, map, available services and directions

Track items – enter tracking ID number or scan the barcode to check the progress of deliveries (available with Royal Mail Tracked* and Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed items).
Receive push notifications on deliveries - never miss a delivery update
Book a Redelivery – if you’ve missed an item you can easily book a Redelivery to your address, your neighbour’s address or a local Post Office – and specify a delivery day.
Save postage receipts – take a photo of receipts and store them on the App.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said “The updated Royal Mail App is helping users to manage their deliveries more efficiently and is rapidly growing with the number of downloads increasing every month. Royal Mail is the first in the industry in the UK to launch an augmented reality feature in its App, making it simpler than ever to send a parcel. The new features of the Royal Mail App are part of our commitment to investing in technology that improves the customer experience for both senders and recipients.”

The App is available for download for free on both the App Store and Google Play store.

The best Post in the world must offer the best working conditions

October , 2019

Syndicom congratulates Swiss Post for its third title of "Best Post in the World" and is delighted that Swiss Post management recognizes the important contribution of the employees who ensure the daily excellence of the postal public service in Switzerland.

Negotiations are currently under way for the renewal of the Swiss Post's collective labor agreement, which governs the minimum working conditions for around 33'000 postal employees. La Poste has the opportunity to move from words to action. Any request for deterioration of the working conditions would be diametrically opposed to the declarations made by the management of La Poste.

As part of an extensive survey and regional meetings, union members defined areas of action for CTC development. Overall, it turned out that measures were needed to develop working conditions. Postal employees have defined the following fields of action.

Better health protection This includes the protection of free time and recovery time
No deterioration of current working conditions, relatively attractive
More esteem and involvement of staff

Staff will not accept any deterioration of working conditions

In the past, the Post has made the headlines, in particular because of breaches of working conditions. Thanks to the union work and the pressure of the employees La Poste Su made corrections. New opportunities are also offered to social partnership. The syndicom's chief negotiator, Matteo Antonini, is cautiously optimistic about the negotiations. "Swiss Post's economic indicators do not justify any deterioration of the CTC and the public statements by the Swiss Post management suggest that it recognizes the value of its staff."

US officially revokes intent to withdraw from postal union during Washington D.C. visit of UPU’s Director General

October 16, 2019
In a drop by with the President of the United States Donald J. Trump, held in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on 15 October, the Director General of the Universal Postal Union Bishar A. Hussein proudly displayed the letter revoking the United States’ decision to withdraw from the UN specialized agency for postal matters.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Hussein thanked President Trump for his warm welcome and generous hospitality. He said, “I am convinced that the maintenance of the worldwide postal system is a victory for everyone on this planet.”

“It is to the great credit of the United States of America, and in particular, the Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, Dr Peter Navarro; the delegations of many other countries; and my negotiating team that we managed to find a compromise,” Mr Hussein added.

Dated 10 October 2019, the letter addressed to Mr Hussein states, “Accordingly, the denunciation shall not take effect and the United States shall remain a party to the UPU Constitution and a member of the Universal Postal Union.” Article 12 of the UPU Constitution states, “Each member country may withdraw from the Union by notice of denunciation of the Constitution given by the government of the country concerned.”

On 17 October 2018, the UPU received a letter of denunciation from the United States, which, had it not been revoked, would have come into effect one year after the day on which it was received.

In a 25 September agreement at the UPU’s third Extraordinary Congress in Geneva, Switzerland, member countries decided to accelerate rate increases to the system for remunerating the delivery of inbound international bulky letters and small packets, also known as the remuneration rate system. Self-declared rates are to be phased-in starting as soon as 2020.

Under the agreed solution, member countries that meet certain requirements – including inbound letter-post volumes in excess of 75,000 metric tonnes – would be able to opt-in to self-declare their rates starting 1 July 2020. Thresholds are included to protect low-volume, developing countries from the impact of the swift reform.

In his opening speech at the Geneva Congress, on 24 September, Mr Hussein said, “I call on all of you in the name of this historical Union to find the courage to choose the right path not just for yourselves, but for the entire industry.”

The postal remuneration system ensures that posts are compensated for the cost of handling, transporting and delivering bulky letters and small packets across borders. Several countries, including the United States, had raised concerns about the system arguing that it failed to provide cost coverage and led to market distortions.

Royal Mail workers vote to strike following ballot

October 16, 2019
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced that 97.1% of its union members in Royal Mail Group have voted for strike action in its latest ballot.

The ballot was carried out following increased concerns from workers over job security and terms and conditions of employment. CWU claims that an agreement reached with Royal Mail last year to raise pay and reform pensions is not being honoured.

The ballot, which included about 110,000 workers, but did not include Parcelforce members, saw the largest ‘yes’ vote and biggest turnout for many years, according to the CWU. CWU also announced that, in two separate ballots for members in Parcelforce Worldwide, outcomes of 95% and 94.7% in favour of industrial action were returned.

Dave Ward and deputy general secretary postal (DGSP), CWU, said, “Just over one year ago, the Royal Mail Group Board and the CWU agreed a blueprint agreement for the future, an agreement that included an historic pension solution, a mutual-interest-driven relationship and a joint vision for a successful postal service with social aims.”

But Ward believes the new leadership of the company has now, “broke that agreement.”
He continues, “Our members take honour seriously and have voted to fight for that agreement against those who now seek to break up the Great British postal service in the interest of fast-track profit and greed.

“The workforce has completely rejected the company’s plans to set up a separate parcels business and allow UK postal services and thousands upon thousands of jobs to wither on the vine,” Dave added, highlighting other issues of grievance, such as increased workload pressure on members, driven by technology.

In a statement, Royal Mail responded, “We want to reach agreement. There are no grounds for industrial action. Industrial action – or the threat of it – is damaging for our business and undermines the trust of our customers.

“Royal Mail wants to transform to meet our customers’ changing needs as we post fewer letters and receive more parcels. Working together at pace, the transformation is about ensuring a more sustainable company, a fairer working environment, the best terms and conditions in our industry and a contemporary universal service.”

CWU said that the exact date and length of strike action has not been decided yet.

United States Postal Service Announces Retirement of Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan

October 16, 2019
The United States Postal Service today announced that Megan J. Brennan, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, is retiring effective Jan. 31, 2020.

“Megan Brennan is a devoted public servant who has helped lead the United States Postal Service through some very challenging circumstances,” said Robert M. Duncan, Chairman of the Board of Governors. “The Governors greatly appreciate her leadership and devotion to the Postal Service.”

“Having begun her career as a letter carrier more than three decades ago, Megan has a fundamental understanding of the important role this organization plays in communities around the country and to our broader economy,” said Duncan. “She has been a strong advocate for postal employees and customers.  We especially appreciate her recent leadership of the Postal Service’s efforts to make significant changes to the international mail system, and level the playing field for American businesses.”

“In the months to come, the Governors will conduct a nationwide search for the 75th Postmaster General of the United States, while continuing to work with Postmaster General Brennan through a successful holiday season and a seamless transition in leadership,” Duncan added.

Brennan expressed her sincere gratitude to the men and women of the United States Postal Service. “I have had the privilege to work with you over the course of my 33-year career.  You embody the spirit of public service, you earn the trust of the American people every day, and you continually reinforce my reverence for this institution and my abiding belief in our mission.”

Brennan is the 74th Postmaster General and first woman to serve in this role. Upon her retirement she will have served in the position for five years. Brennan previously served as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of the Postal Service for four years, and held prior roles as Vice President of both Eastern Area and Northeast Area Operations. Brennan began her Postal Service career as a letter carrier in Lancaster, PA.
As Postmaster General, Brennan advanced technology and customer-centric strategies to invest in the future of the Postal Service and to shape growth opportunities for the organization and the industries it serves. These strategies encompassed better use of data and technology, improved speed-to-market of product and service innovations, continuously improved processes throughout the organization, and fully engaged and leveraged the talents of the organization’s 635,000-employee workforce.

“When I was appointed Postmaster General, I made a commitment to the Board of Governors that I would serve for five years and it has been my absolute honor to do so,” said Brennan. “I feel a deep responsibility to this organization and to its future. The advance notice of my retirement will allow the Board adequate time to conduct an executive search, select the next Postmaster General, and ensure a seamless transition.”
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

UK Post Office - new deal with 28 banks

October 12, 2019

The UK Post Office has announced a new Banking Framework agreement with 28 UK banks. The new agreement ensures subpostmasters and the Post Office receive a fair remuneration for providing banking services.

Last year Post Office branches handled over 130 million transactions on behalf of UK banks - often in communities where bank branches no longer exist.

“We have been working with the banks to ensure we have the right service levels across our network to meet their customers’ needs and to ensure our branches receive a fair remuneration for providing these vital services.” - Martin Kearsley, Director of Banking Services, Post Office.

All the banks have reconfirmed their commitment through the new agreement that their customers can access a range of cash and cheque banking services at Post Office branches.
Well, all except one.

Barclays has chosen to stop allowing their customers to make cash withdrawals from 8 January 2020. Barclays’ customers will be able to continue to deposit cash, cheques and access change and balance enquiries at Post Office branches after this date as these services are unaffected by this decision.

This has sparked petitions and media outrage in the UK, despite Barclays committing to freeze last-in-town and remote branch closures for two years.

If you think this all sounds familiar… you’re right! Australia Post signed agreements with three of Australia’s four major banks to continue offering banking services via post offices but with an improved fee structure. When I say “improved”, I mean, "Australia Post and Licensees get more”.

One bank - ANZ - refused to pay the additional fees, and despite the bad press the bank has stuck to its guns. In the meantime, second-tier banks and other financial institutions have also signed up to the new Bank@Post deal with Australia Post. ANZ has not wavered.
